Ride and Stride on Saturday 11th September 2010

Do you have a bike and are you able to ride it? Can you walk a bit? Would you like to spend a Saturday visiting village churches or those more familiar ones locally? For many years, members of my family have pedalled along different scenic routes in Berkshire and neighbouring counties in early September and enjoyed it! One or two other parishioners have also taken part - there is no age limit but under-18s need their parents' permission. Check your diary and think about joining in.

Ride and Stride (formerly known as CROW) is the annual cycling and walking event organised by the County Churches Trusts across the country. The aims of the event are to raise money for churches of all denominations, to promote interest in our churches, many of historical and architectural importance, and to involve people of all ages in an enjoyable occasion.

Many churches in Berkshire and all the neighbouring counties will be open to Berkshire residents. Several of them will be stewarded by enthusiasts willing to point out interesting features and provide refreshments. Our own church was open for many years until recently - now we reluctantly have to leave the signing-in sheet outside a locked door.

Cyclists or walkers are sponsored either by donation or by an amount per church visited between 10.00am and 6.00pm on the day. The sponsorship money received is split 50/50 - the Trust retains half, which it channels to churches applying for grants for renovation and returns half to the participant's nominated church. We have raised over £2,000 over the years and usually give our fifty per cent of funds raised to Cafod.

There is no particular route so individuals or groups of the cyclists and walkers can choose their own companions and plan one to suit their interests. Public transport or car can be used to get to the first church and from the last one.

If you would like to know more or you are interested in taking part as a cyclist or walker and have a view on the destination of any funds raised, please contact Cathy Hill on 0118 9328369 or by email jandchill@dsl.pipex.com . Guidelines, a sponsorship form, a list of participating churches and a sticker will be supplied.

Sponsors are always welcome and donations can be Gift Aided.
